No breath, no voice. Period.
What is Fitzmaurice Voicework? (click for more information)
Whether you act for stage or screen, a good voice – one that is strong, flexible, and that responds organically to the demands of performance – is of paramount importance. Your voice is the most powerful way of connecting to an audience, and it all starts with the breath. When your breathing is free and unconstrained, you can more easily connect to your experience and allow yourself to be present with your feelings rather than unconsciously avoiding them.
This workshop will focus on the Destructuring positions used in Fitzmaurice Voicework, positions which loosen muscular rigidity, increase natural resonance, help develop a felt sense of internal energy flow, and encourage the breathing to become more spontaneous. As your breathing becomes more free and able to follow your moment-by-moment involuntary impulses, you gain access to previously unconscious or frozen impulses. This expands your experience of your self, your sense of being present and free, and your ability to express these experiences vocally.
Catherine Fitzmaurice has been developing her work for 40 years by combining classical voice training techniques with adaptations of yoga, shiatsu, and Reichian bodywork. It is now taught at MFA acting programs at Yale and Harvard, as well as at NYU studios, the Moscow Art Theatre, and many other schools and institutions around the world.
This workshop is for all performers, from those who have years of experience but want to learn a new approach to the voice, to those who are just beginning and need to learn how to connect to their own voices.
The next weekend intensive will be held on a weekend in November (exact dates TBD) from 11am - 4pm, at Fraser Studios, 115 Danforth Ave. The price is $150 ($120 if you're an Equity or an AACtion member.)

Student Testimonials
"Adam Bradley's weekend intensive course was a good introduction to the Fitzmaurice Voice work. His practical, insightful and specific guidance made it possible to take in the exercises fully. This work is fundamental for the voice and for acting since it can release entrenched physical tension and bring more availability to the breath/physical impulse. The result - a more available and spontaneous actor and human being. Thanks, Adam!"
